The story tells of the very different lives of two women of the south, one from a prominent white family and the other a house slave who was finally able to buy her freedom with her talent as a free-market seamstress and her tenacity of survival to become the confident and friend of Mary Lincoln, in the White House. Mrs. Keckley was a noted seamstress in Washington D.C., and she had made many dresses and garments for Robert E. Lee's wife, poloticians wives and the soon to be first Lady of the South, Varina Davis. I don't think we will ever truly understand Mrs. Keckley's relationship to Mrs. Lincoln, but she staid friends with her through the troubling times in the White House, through the assassination of President Lincoln and even after Mary Lincoln was considered by most people as a feeble minded old woman. Mrs. Keckley would still come to meet and talk with her. Something in thier backgrounds went beyond the boundaries of who they were suppose to be and found a lasting friendship. Mary shared secrets with Elizabeth, that she could not even tell her husband. I foumd the book interesting on a personal level from doing family genealogical research. It showed that proud men and women could survive and move forward from the chains of slavery and find their place in the world.
This was a great historical fiction novel based on true facts. It is a good introduction to Lincoln's wife and her life before, during, and following the Civil War. The prose is written so children will understand it, but with enough descriptions so it is interesting for even adults. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in the Lincoln era and events surrounding the family as they progressed from Illinois to the White House.
I'm not sure how or why I clicked on this book, I was looking for the Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker book, however, Luck was in my click. It was not only interesting and informative, but well written and very enjoyable. Glad my fingers did the job, too.
Ok so people that aren't history fans might just not even give the book a second glance but they should. I think it's a entertaining book for adults or children and I would recommend it to anyone who's tired of the same old stuff. The author keeps you interested the whole time giveing you both the girls point of view it's a great book try it! )
I have always been intrigued by the history of our country. It is hard to imagine the difficulties of society with the racial inequality and the different perspectives on that. The actual reality of the relationship and how the author was able to piece things together without adding a lot of fluff and nonsense was very refreshing. I would recommend this book highly to anyone who would like to understand that era in any particular aspect.
I could barely put the book down. Facts about the slave mistreatment that I am glad to learn but also ashamed of. It was so well written with good information.
This book was a surprise for me. I never knew Mary Todd, had such a strong friendship and support from her dressmaker a slave. She helped Mrs. Lincoln at her most desperate time after the death of her husband.
