After reading The Emperor of Ocean Park I was exited to get back into another mysteries twisted book by the Stephen carter. I thought the book was a little long and took two attempts for me to get going. Once I got going I was interested but got tiered and just wanted it to finish. overly detailed and unnecessarily wordy, and some of the actions were out there to say the least. probably wont read another carter book for another two years; need to rest my eyes.

New England White A Novel Stephen L Carter 9780375413629 Books Reviews

This is the 2nd Stephen Carter novel I've read, and I truly enjoyed it. Unlike Palace Council, the story here gets right into the action and doesn't drag along too often. Lots of twists and turns, possibly predictable in some aspects to a very careful reader, but it was a fun ride to the end for this reader. It has made me consider dividing into another novel by this author, and keeping him on my must-read list.
I enjoyed reading New England White, however it was extremely long and at times laborious with unnecessary description. I also found the clues the author provided to solve the mystery were a stretch for the average reader to decipher. Many of the relationships were a stretch as well. I felt the story was more a fantasy of Stephen Carter not a fictitious account of well to do black people (the darker nation). Looking at the work as a mysterious fantasy it was a interesting read.
I read this book as part of my monthly book club reading. I must admit, for the first 2 weeks, I kept falling asleep trying to plod through the first 200 or so pages. Nevertheless, I was determined to get through it, and I did. I understand wanting to develop the characters and background for the reader, but this text was done to the point of being tedious and could have been written with far less detail at the beginning. In addition, some of the language seemed inappropriate for a work of fiction and sometimes left me feeling disconnected with the characters and sometimes the plot. Overall, the suspense was there, and that is what kept me persevering to the end of this 600+ page novel (oh, and none of my other book club members were able to get past the first 2 chapters, but they were enlightened by my synopsis of the book during our meeting). As far as a recommendation - this is not a quick nor easy read. Because I did appreciate the text once I got to the end, I considered purchasing another book by this author with a similar theme; that is, until I read that it, too, contained 600+ pages. I'll pass for now.
This is the best, or at least a tie with The Impeachment of Lincoln. If you enjoyed The Emperor of Ocean Park, you will love this book. Carter's books are keepers for the library--to be read and reread.
Somehow, being an academic legal scholar and a writer of fiction, seem incompatible. But Stephen Carter pulls it off. At a Smithsonian Book Festival, Professor Carter gave a wise piece of advice to an older member of the audience who asserted that each person who reaches senior age should have at least one book inside of them. Professor Carter responded affirmatively but warned that is not the issue the challenge is getting that book out of oneself.
In searching around for an intricate mystery, I found this one. I had read The Emperor of Ocean Park years ago and remembered how Carter could pen a tale. Both novels are remarkably detailed and complex. The moment one feels she has solved the mystery, in reading further she soon discovers she's wrong, that, in fact there's another twist in the story. I think Carter is courageous in exposing the lives of the black elite. The very idea of such a group seems a threat to blacks, whites and others. I want to give this work a rating of four and a half stars, if allowed. My only reluctance to giving five stars is the length. This was a long book
Having read the third book first and then the first, I found this one not nearly as concise and strongly written. About half way through I remarked that this second one could have been better offered as a short story. It needed editing. I found the characters not nearly as clearly defined as in the other two novels . They were mesmerizing and difficult to put down. This one was not nearly so. Had I read it before the third, I wouldn't have gone on to what I believe is the author's tour de force with the first coming in a strong second. This one whines and winds itself into a convoluted story the reader loses interest in following. I do enjoy following his characters in more detail from book to book but this one tried too hard with too much.
