This book was informative about what happened with individual Jews and in their hometowns during the Holocaust. I personally knew about the larger concentration camps, but was not aware of how many smaller ones there were and how much slave labor there really was. I am grateful to everyone who contributed their story and to Martin Gilbert for his willingness to write a book to inform those of us who are still in the dark about some of the aspects of the Holocaust. If not for this book and others, I would have no clue!

This remarkable book consists of the comprehensive results interviews with and letters by 732 concentration camp survivors from the holocaust.
These young people-both boys and girls-where settled in Britain after World War II , some stayed and made lives in Britain , while others immigrated to the USA , Australia , Canada and Israel.
Some of the boys made their mark in the Israel War of Independence defending the fledgling Jewish State after it was attacked by five Arab armies , aiming to anihilate all Jews in Israel (as the Arabs and anti-Zionists of the world aim for today i.e a second holocaust.)
Part of the book consists of harrowing eyewitness accounts of the survivors , hence an important testament to holocaust remembrance. The accounts are often graphic and bring the grim reality of what happened to the Jewish people during world War II to bear on us.
It is important to remember the holocaust again , at times when some , like Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and others , deny it's existance.

On the back jacket of this book the following sentence is written " In the summer of 1945 Britain declared itself willing to take in 1,000 young survivors of the Holocaust, but no more than 732 could be found." The distinguished historian Martin Gilbert has here collected the recollections of these 'boys'(There were a small number of girls among them) from their early days in the villages of Poland, Czechoslavakia and Hungary through their time in the ghettos concentration camps forced death marches- through their liberation, and then their period of rehabilitation, if that is the right word, in England, and their subsequent lives. This work tells individual stories in snippets which are collated together into a narrative. There is very careful documentation and presentation of sources. In a sense what we see here is in microcosm the whole story of the Shoah. The chapters involving the actual times of persecution and physical struggle to survival are naturally the most harrowing, painful and moving in the book. No human being should ever have to go through what these young people went through. They saw their loved ones murdered before their eyes. They faced incredible tests of survival and moral dilemnas which were impossible to answer in a simple clear way. There are stories of courage and boldness in survival, but it is made clear how many times it was some small miracle of chance that enabled these people to survive when their relatives and friends did not .In the course of this we see ultimate degradation of Man by Man. The Nazi Germans and their helpers ideologically based and yet often incidental and gratuitous sadistic cruelty makes one wonder what it is to be a human being. There are heartbreaking stories of young people returning to their homes after the war and being met with murderous hatred by their Polish neighbors.
The story of the resilience in rehabilitation and recovery, the solidarity of the 'boys' in this makes for a somewhat encouraging final part of the book. But nothing can erase in the minds of these survivors what they lived through and the story goes with them to the end of their days.

Rarely heard accounts from very young people about how they survived a horrific experience. An inspiring book about the resilience of the spirit under the most difficult of circumstances.
My brother suggested I get this book, because my father who passed away in January 2001 was on of those boys. His story was not told in the book. This book is both sad and fascinating, and it is helping my to understand what my father went through..
This book is absolutely overwhelming! I can't imagine trying to research a book of this size. The author did a fantastic job. In many ways it was so difficult to get through this book, much of it seemed like a litany of horror. I'm glad that I kept reading though, because the story of the post-war experiences of the boys (and girls) was so meaningful. A book well worth reading.
